We are deeply saddened by the passing of Martina Correia, the sister of recently executed death row inmate, Troy Anthony Davis. Martina had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. Despite her decade long battle with cancer, she spent years working with Amnesty International and the NAACP fighting for her brother, maintaining that there was far too much doubt in his case to allow for an execution. Despite her efforts as well as the pleas of leaders from around the world, the state of Georgia killed Troy on September 21.

In addition to being a strong advocate for her brother and death penalty abolition, Martina was also a war veteran and a leading activist for access to quality health care for all.  She also worked to raise awareness to prevent breast cancer.

Following the announcement of Martina’s death, Amnesty International USA’s Chief Operating Officer Curt Goering  released the following statement:

“Our hearts are breaking over the loss of this extraordinary woman. She fought to save her brother’s life with courage, strength and determination, every step of the way. She was a powerful example of how one person can make a difference as she led the fight for justice for Troy Davis, even as she endured her own decade-long battle with cancer. And despite the terrible blow of his execution, she remained brave and defiant to the core of her being, stating her conviction that one day his death would be the catalyst for ending the death penalty. Even as Martina’s health failed, she was making plans to continue her work against the death penalty in her brother’s memory, as he urged his supporters to do just before he was put to death. She was a tenacious fighter, a graceful inspiration to activists everywhere, and a true hero of the movement for human rights.”

TADP echoes these sentiments and we offer our deepest sympathy to Martina’s family. They have experienced such great loss this year. The Davises’ mother, Virginia Davis, also died this year in April.
